why?

Why do bad things happen to good people?  I asked my parents this question at the age of 14 when a very close friend was killed in a car accident.  A young girl who was so pure and innocent, with a love for life and compassion for others.  Someone who spoke only words of kindness, reached out to others with a heart of gold, brought joy to those around her.  She was a good person who was killed in an instant.  Why?

An unborn baby that has a severe heart defect with 2 incredible God loving parents.  These parents are friends of mine and they are so loving, patient, and compassionate with their 3 beautiful children.  He is a youth pastor at our church and she is a stay at home mom providing unconditional love and lots of fun for her little ones.  They radiate joy.  Even when they learned of the news of their son Stehpen having such a serious heart problem, they never complained.  Their son has a special heart.  They know God is in control.  They know they can get through anything but still... why does something like this need to happen?
Please read more about their story on their blog by clicking here.

A beautiful mother fights breast cancer, then loses her husband in a tragic car accident and 5 months later finds out her cancer has returned.  WHY??

These are all good people.  God loving people.  People that have joy deep in their hearts.  People that bring light and love to the world.

God graces us
He uses us to shine a light

We fret over someone cutting us off on the freeway or someone jumping in front of us in the grocery store line.  It's time to realize how precious life is and not waste a moment with out being in joy.  Be an example to others of what living a life with God is like.  Before getting upset over something "little" take a deep breath and smile.

I have an overwhelming sense of peace tonight.  The more I pray, the better I feel.  I feel safe.  I know He is in control and it feels good.  I can't answer any of those questions.  I may never know why bad things happen to good people but I can choose joy, whatever the circumstance, because they have.

  2. Simply beautiful.

Our human nature questions such things... but it is our job to trust in the Lord and lean on Him at all times... especially when our spirits are troubled.

Wishing you a blessed Easter weekend.

  4. This post seriously couldn't have come at a better time. I have been asking myself this so much lately. I have a friend who's nephew is ten months old and he may have a brain tumor. I know another family who's baby was just born early due to the fact the mom has been diagnosed with cervical cancer. Sometimes it is so hard to understand why things happen the way they do.

  6. Love this post.

I really hate it when people attribute tragedies to being at the hand of God. Sometimes I hear people try to explain deaths as "God needed another angel" which really sickens me because nowhere in the Bible does it say that God causes human suffering for his own purposes. In fact it says the opposite (James 1:13) "When under trial let no one say I am being tried by God, for with evil things cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone."

Tragedies and maladies are a result of humans ruling themselves for thousands of years under the misguided notion that we were better off deciding for ourselves what is right and wrong. God has to allow humans to prove to themselves that they are better off following his guidance. I can't wait for the day when Revelation 21:3,4 is fulfilled: "With that I heard a loud voice from the thrown say: 'Look the tent of God is with mankind and he will reside with them and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eye and death will be no more neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

  7. There's a book called, Why Bad Things Happen to Good People. It is a good read.

  8. It's hard to understand just why each little thing (good and bad) happens in our lives but it's all part of a BIG BIG quilt and we can only see one little square of it. That's how I think of it.

  9. hi karen. i have seen your blog button on a few of my friend's sidebars and decided i had to come on over. :)
i'm SO glad i did! i've been reading through many of your posts and am truly touched and so inspired by your strength, determination and beauty (inside and out).
this post spoke to me on so many levels.
it is so trying sometimes to sit and watch others in pain or wonder why things go the way they do in our very own lives...but when we seek the good in life and trust that there is a reason for it...it gives us more hope and strengthens our faith. you so beautifully demonstrate joy in your life. it is evident in just the handful of posts i've read.
thank you so much for sharing your journey. your family is gorgeous.
i couldn't help but smile as soon as your music came on. alison krauss is my absolute FAVORITE!! i listen to her all the time and started my blog last year with her song, "crazy faith."

i'm wishing you and your family a very blessed Easter <3

  10. The question why is so tough isn't? The only peace I ever have about these circumstances ... is that this isn't heaven and we will in a fallen world...What joy we find in Christ and while we might not see it now we never know what blessings Gods can bring out of such a sad situation. Praying for you and your friends!
