My sister and I {along with some very close and special friends} participated in the event November of 2009, 7 months after we lost our Nana.
Our Nana was an incredible, warm hearted, kind, gentle, amazing woman. A woman that is terribly missed by her entire family. She battled breast cancer when she was younger and she had a mastectomy. She survived the grueling treatment. Then in her 80's she got it again. It spread to her bones and she lost her life in April of 2006.
After seeing how much walking in the 3-day meant to me, Anthony knew he wanted to somehow participate the following year. He assumed he was going to volunteer with the medical crew which would have been great except I signed him up to walk with me :) Together we had to raise $4200 and walk 60 miles in 3 days. It was the best {and most physically painful} 3 days of my life with him.
Since Anthony didn't get to sign up for the medical team he was able to use his skills on me. I was so jacked up from day one but I was not going to quit. I would not give up. We joked around saying, it's not going to kill me to keep walking. Little did we know.... This walk is what the doctors feel triggered my mitochondrial disease.
I was forced to get over my fear of peeing in porta potties.
We held hands all 60 miles!! People would walk by us each day and say, "You guys are still holding hands??" Yep!! There were thousands of girls drooling over him, I couldn't let him go. And he couldn't let me go otherwise I would have dropped to the ground.
I love you so much for taking this journey with me!!
Now for my Public Service Announcement: Women, feel your boobies. Men, feel your womens' boobies {and your own}.

What a lovely smile she has on her face! I'll bet she had a great sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteCancer sucks, doesn't it. It has ravaged my brother's health and stolen so much from him (he is diagnosed as terminal) but it hasn't stolen his sense of humor nor his love of life!

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful blog! I love that you and your husband held hands the whole way. My husband found a lump in his breast over ten years ago. Praise the Lord it wasn't malignant but it was a wake up call to us that men can get breast cancer too.

Just yesterday a lovely friend of mine received the all clear in her battle with very aggressive breast cancer. I am so proud of her! Thank you for sharing.
